September 8, 2009. A date I will never forget. It was the first day of my doctoral program. The dream. I had spent a year applying, interviewing and waiting, and finally: here it was. So, in typical Vashti manner, I straightened my hair the day before, prepared my backpack and filled it with pens, markers and brand new college-ruled notebooks. I picked out a casual (but professional-ish looking) outfit and hung it in my closet the night before my 8:30am class.

My first class was Cognitive Assessment. Woah. It is a four credit class and it is clearly important: at the end of the semester, if you don’t pass the Competency Exam, then you do not pass the class. The first thing that we do is get our “kits” for the WAIS-IV and WISC-IV. (These are kits that are used to measure intelligence – IQ). I am told not to lose them, they are each worth around 1,100 dollars. Woah. “You will have to invest between 12-16 hours a week studying for this class if you wish to get an A”. Woah.

However, it was a good first day. A lot of work is ahead. Hope I survive it.
